I Am A Fan × Budget

I Am A Fan · Sponsor Edition · Prepared for Budget Insurance

Reason to Care.

Act 1 · Reason to Care

Nobody wakes up thinking about their policy.

Act 1 · Budget's Own Proof

At the wellness walk, the insurer's stand was the busiest one there.

Not a headline sponsor. Just a stand. It didn't feel like financial services, it felt like a chill zone. Outside of the liquor bar next door, it had the most continuous flow of people at the event.

Was it

The setup?

A beautiful, relaxed space where people could just sit and breathe.

Was it

The competition?

Sign up, leave your details, stand a chance to win.

Was it

The energy drinks?

Free cold drinks on a long walk day. Never underestimate it.

The Insight
It was the experience.
Experiential is a thing for insurance. Now scale it.
Act 2 · Reason to Believe

Don't rent the stadium.
Own the road to it.

When KFC put its name on the big concerts, people assumed it was KFC's concert. It wasn't, it was a sponsorship. Perception is ownership. Budget doesn't need headline money to look like it owns the biggest moments in South Africa. It needs to own the part nobody else has claimed: getting there.

How does an insurer become a brand people are fans of?

Are You A Fan Of TYLA?

I Am A Fan, the Brand South Africa movement, brought to life by Budget Insurance. Real fans, a famous host and a road trip to the country's biggest moments.

The Platform Is Already Built

Brand SA built the movement. Budget gives it wheels.

I Am A Fan backs the fans, not the stars. Everyone is a fan of something. At home it carries Play Your Part, abroad it carries Global South Africans, and the content is shot and sent in by the public. No crews, no call sheets.

Act 3 · The Idea
Red Cherry presents The Fan Car

Every week, Budget picks real South African fans and drives them, with a well-known host, to the moment they love most. A concert, a Bok test, a derby, a comedy night. Budget doesn't sponsor the event. It sponsors the journey to it. And on the way, a quiz that can upgrade the whole day to VIP and backstage.

One idea, both of Budget's briefs
01

Brand love beyond the category. When people think of Budget, they think of the best day of their year.

02

Experiential, scaled. The buzz of the wellness walk stand, taken to every big event in the country.

03

Financial edutainment people want to watch. The November programme lives inside the most fun part of the trip.

04

The partnership Budget asked for. Brand South Africa's platform, with SA Tourism along for the ride.

Why A Car

Insurance and cars
go hand in hand.

We didn't pick a bus, a stage or a stadium box. We picked the thing Budget knows best. Car insurance sits at the heart of Budget's business, so the Fan Car puts the product in the starring role every single week, without a single hard sell.

  • The product is the hero

Every episode is built around the one thing Budget protects most. The brand never has to explain itself.

  • The car is where people talk

Road trips are where the real conversations happen. It's the most natural studio there is for a host, a crew and the Cover Round.

  • Getting there safely is Budget's job

Safe-arrival messaging, petrol-stop tips and padkos breaks fit the journey naturally, because looking after people on the road is what Budget does.

  • Nobody else owns the road

Twenty logos fight for the stadium. Not one of them owns the drive there.

Prove you're a fan

Entry isn't a form. It's footage.

Fans send a video of themselves in it: in the stand, in the crowd, at the braai screen. On camera they tell us what they're a fan of, where they'd love to go and who they'd take. Every entry is I Am A Fan content, and we can see who comes alive on camera.

02
You've been chosen

The win is content too.

Winners get a reply video: "Your fan video was amazing. Reply with where you want to go and who's coming." Their reaction becomes the next post. The crew stays small, the winner plus two or three friends, so the host can genuinely connect.

03
The Fan Car

A famous host at the wheel.

A branded Budget car pulls up at home. Riding with them is a host matched to the destination: a music influencer for Tyla, a rugby personality for the Boks. Real people, and the audience knows they're real. That's the difference from a decade of car-talk ads.

04
The Cover Round

Three questions. One bonus.

On the drive, the host runs a quick money and insurance quiz. Three standard questions win merch for the crew. Then the bonus question: get it right and the day upgrades to VIP and backstage. The financial education lands at the most exciting moment of the trip.

05
The Arrival

The stadium joins in.

At the venue, the Budget crew wears "I'm A Fan Of..." tops. Find one, share your details, and you could be in the next Fan Car. The chill-zone buzz of the wellness walk, at stadium scale, with a database building every week.

Steps 01 + 02 · Fan First, Always

You have to be in it to win it.

The trigger is always the fan. Not a competition you enter from the couch, a moment you're already living. Weekly prompts keep it topical, and every entry, every win and every reaction is new I Am A Fan content for Brand SA.

  • Send your fan video

From the stands, the crowd, the shebeen screen. Tell us what you're a fan of, where you'd go and who you'd take. TikTok, Instagram or WhatsApp.

  • Get picked

Every week Budget picks the crews with the most energy on camera. The winner reveal is its own post.

  • Name your crew

You plus two or three friends. Small enough for the host to connect, big enough that nobody feels exposed. Your friends want in anyway.

Step 04 · Financial Edutainment · Play It

The Cover Round.

You've already won the trip. Nobody can take that away. Three standard questions win merch for the crew, then one bonus question decides the upgrade to VIP and backstage. Every level is named after a level of cover, so the format teaches what cover means while making people want more of it.

Step 05 · The Arrival

The stadium
joins in.

The Fan Car doesn't stop at the gate. Inside, the Budget crew turns the venue into the next round of entries. Spotting the crew isn't enough. You enter with a selfie, in full fan mode.

  • Find the crew

The Budget crew works the stands in "I'm A Fan Of..." tops. Every top is a different fandom.

  • Selfie in full fan mode

Face paint, jersey, makarapa, full voice. Snap a selfie with the crew member showing how big a fan you are.

  • Post it, you're in

Tag #AreYouAFan and opt in. Every selfie is an entry for the next Fan Car, a Budget database sign-up and fresh I Am A Fan content.

Three Fan Cars. Three areas. One episode.
Intercut on the day, more winners, same personal connection
The Third Partner · SA Tourism

Every episode is already travel.

When the moment is in another city, the trip becomes the story. Tyla only playing Cape Town means the crew flies down, and the episode becomes a destination piece on the way. South Africans discovering their own country on the way to the moments they love.

Act 4 · Need to Do

Two ways to get on the road.

Recommended
Option A

Co-funded

Budget Insurance, Brand South Africa and SA Tourism share the cost, each funding the layer they own. Lowest outlay for Budget, biggest reach for all three.

  • Budget: car, hosts, prizes, Cover Round
  • Brand SA: platform, endorsement, amplification
  • SA Tourism: travel, destinations, experiences
Option B

Budget solo

The same concept, carried by Budget alone, priced separately so the difference is clear. Still runs on the I Am A Fan platform, with travel episodes budgeted in.

  • Full ownership of the series
  • Partners can join in a later phase
  • Scope scales to the budget
Either way

The long play

Whatever the funding, Budget carries the line forward as its own. Every time people see Budget, the question is there, and it says something without saying anything.

What We Need To Fill The Tank

Next steps.

01

Budget's brief, in Budget's words. Target market, tone of voice and objectives, so we build on your commitments, not our assumptions.

02

The November edutainment strategy. So we can show the Cover Round ticks off every objective of the programme.

03

Brand South Africa alignment. Confirm the I Am A Fan partner model, with Budget as the launch partner.

04

The SA Tourism conversation. Agree which destinations ride along from launch, and which come in as phase two.

05

The host roster and the numbers. Realistic hosts, how many Fan Cars a week, and costed Options A and B.

From Soweto to Ellis Park. From Joburg to the Mother City.
This is not a sponsorship.
This is a road trip.

Budget doesn't ask people to care about insurance. It takes them to the moments they already care about, and it's in the car with them when they get there.
